Learn the Hamotzi Blessing

May 14, 2015

Learn the Hamotzi blessing that Jewish people say before eating bread made out of wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt flour. (And famously, challah, the special braided bread, on Shabbat!) The name of the Hamotzi blessing, by the way, comes from the Hebrew מוציא “he removes.”

This karaoke video was recorded and painted by kids in the third and fourth grades at Temple Sinai of Oakland.

The words they are singing are:

ברוך אתה ה’ א‑לוהינו, מלך העולם, המוציא לחם מן הארץ.‏
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam, hamotzi lehem min ha’aretz.
Blessed are You, Adonai, Who brings forth bread from the earth.

David Melech Yisrael: A Jewish Kids Sing-Along

May 13, 2015

Learn the Jewish song called David Melech Yisrael (דוד מלך ישראל‎ “David is the King of Israel”) with kids in Kindergarten and First Grade from Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, California. The song lyrics are simple and consist of only five words which are repeated many times. These lyrics can be translated into English as, “David, king of Israel, lives and endures.” (דוד מלך ישראל, חי, חי וקיים‎), transliterated to: David Melech Yisrael; Chai, Chai, Vekayam.

Jewish children are often taught this song at a young age, as it is fairly easy to memorize. Common traditions involve singing it with added arm and hand movements, or singing it as fast as possible while trying to keep up with the arm and hand movements.

Gratitude for David Melech Yisrael

Temple_Isaiah_125x125This video is the outcome of a series of creative Jewish learning and media workshops offered in 2014 exclusively to Jewish educational groups in the San Francisco East Bay Area

Thank you to each of the Temple Isaiah students, board members and staff leaders that participated in this project. A very special thanks to each of the leaders that helped make this project happen.
